Open Atelier Postcards

The postcard is an old-fashioned way of communication, a bit romantic but nevertheless most of us have a selection at home that we are very fond of.

Postcards blossomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as an easy way for people to communicate, and they became extremely popular. During this the golden age of postcards, collecting became a real mainstream craze. The frenzy of purchasing, mailing, and collecting postcards was a hobby for thousands and thousands of people, it even became so crazy, that the situation of this strong passion often was referred to as "postcarditis". The more serious part, namely the study and collecting of postcards have a Greek term - deltiology.

In Open Atelier we aim at creating innovation so cultural heritage becomes the point of departure for new interactions and experiences among the audience, the museum, and its professionals.

As a part of our work, we have a creative workshop in Venice were some of the young participants are going to work with old postcards picturing historic places and situations in Venice. This part of the workshop gave inspiration to an exercise on how to experience Venice, and we plan to create some experience walks during the workshop days where all participants can focus on interacting with Venice.

On postcards one often writes a short prose that fits the postcard ad captures a certain feeling, an ambiance, the character of a certain place and the connection you find.

On the experience walks we are going to ask the groups to create a new edition of a postcard. A digital one, that will be posted each day.
