Leveraging Cultural Heritage as Catalyst for Sustainable Development Goals: A Creative Call

Although it represents an under-recognized resource for sustainable development, Cultural Heritage can be a strategic catalyst for the achievement of the social, economic and environmental tasks blueprinted by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the core of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The Open Atelier Competition aims to nourish and promote this concept through the development of innovative multi-media and co-creative formats based on the envisioning of new interpretations and uses of the collections of four European museums – Einar Jónsson Museum (Iceland), Plečnik House at Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Millesgården (Sweden) and Art Museums of Skagen (Denmark).

This digital initiative calls on all creative talents to explore these heritages in the light of their possible connection with or involvement in the achievement of one or multiple SDGs. The ensuing proposals will be conveyed through a “visual statement”, intended to harness the powerful link between cultural heritage and people, to foster positive changes and support the construction of a sustainable, fair, prosperous and peaceful future.

Participants will be asked to manipulate one or more digital images to produce a “visual statement”, i.e. an image or a short video, aimed at proposing a new interpretation of the museum’s heritage as a catalyst for the promotion or achievement of one or multiple SDGs.

The “visual statement” must be accompanied by a “claim”, i.e. a short text, encapsulating the proposal’s meaning and message (in less than 50 words).

Further details about the submission formats will be provided together with the documentation after registration.

Participation in the Open Atelier Competition is free of charge; the application can be submitted by an individual or a group.
